Mid-Century Modern Real Estate For Sale: July 6th, 2018

There's quirky in North Carolina, absolute perfection in Napa and a stunning home in Indiana. Neglected Showpiece in Greenwood, IN - 2,839 sqft. ($650,000)
Known as the Mills House (named after its original owners) this sprawling modern home was designed by architect Harry Cooler and built in 1957. Set on a wooded 4 acre lot, this is a fantastic design made for entertaining with its balconies, walls of glass and flowing open plan. Unfortunately the home has been sitting vacant and under-maintained for many years and was listed on Indiana Landmark's 10 Most Endangered Sites List. The owners have finally decided to sell, giving someone the opportunity to restore it to its original splendor. It will take a lot of work but will definitely be worth it.

Jack Hillmer Gem in Napa, CA - 2,100 sqft. ($3,333,000)
If you're looking for perfection in architecture this one may be as close as you're gonna get. A superb design by Jack Hillmer, with its angled block walls, stunning wood paneled ceiling and an entire rear facade of glass, this is pure genius. Featured in Dwell after it was restored by its current owners, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

William Kaeser Design in Madison, WI - 3,016 sqft. ($725,000)
This 1958 design by architect William Kaeser adheres to Frank Lloyd Wright's principles of Organic Architecture with local stone and wood used as the main building materials and the house nicely settled into the slope of the rolling lot. The home is very private from the street but opens up to walls of glass at the rear. The light quality in the main space is exquisite (2nd photo) and the tastefully updated home provides a variety of spaces for very comfortable modern living. The neighborhood is filled with other interesting homes as the listing explains: '...a unique neighborhood developed in the 1950s. It was required that each house be designed by an architect.'

Unique 1969 home in Greenboro, NC - 3,300 sqft. ($325,000)
This quirky home definitely qualifies as unique. Interestingly angled walls and windows give this house a strong identity and make for well lit interiors that feel cosy but not claustrophobic. While the house needs work to make it cohesive, it could be a very good looking home. The fireplace in the (second?) kitchen is a strange feature but the idyllic wooded lot will distract you from that.

Wrightian Home in Lebanon, PA- 3 bed/3 bath. ($349,900)
Designed by architect Peter Berndston, this 1961 home has great character. Set into the slope, the lines of the house thrust outwards in a dynamic fashion. Deep overhangs and open trellises below all help extend the lines. The interior is very much in keeping with Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonians with built in furniture, a large central fireplace and rooms all having a strong connection to the outdoors.
