Mid-Century Modern Real Estate For Sale: June 14th, 2019

As we are moving swiftly into the warmest season, we are also gravitating toward amazing homes that also have access to some water. Each of the homes in this week's mid-century modern real estate roundup are either close to a lake, next to the ocean or boast a refreshing swimming pool. They may call for very deep pockets but they are oh so good!

Winston Elting home in Coloma, MI - 2,000 sqft. ($2,449,000)

This is a drool-worthy 1956 modern home by Winston Elting of Chicago firm (Paul) Schweikher & Elting. Love the public/private side contrasts with nothing but brick facing the road and all glass facing Lake Michigan. Beautiful setting and this house makes the most of it. Fantastic connection to the outdoors with both patio and internal courtyard access from the bedrooms. You'll recognize many similar details from Paul Schweikher's own home in Schaumburg, IL we profiled last week including the signature Schweikher fireplace with bricks laid on end.

Treehouse Paradise in Palmetto Bay, FL - 1,634 sqft. ($1,298,000)

We love everything about this 1967 treehouse - except the price! Set on 1.64 acres of Hardwood Hammock Preserve and near Biscayne Bay, this concrete and cypress structure is both strong and beautiful. Set up high to catch the breezes and avoid flood waters, the proportions of the house in its setting are superb. Great interior beam structure, Japanese inspired details and cohesiveness throughout.

Norman Carver Lakeside Retreat in South Haven, MI - 2,562 sqft ($2,000,000)

This stunning 4.42 acre property on Lake Michigan is back on the market with some breathtaking photography. We are featuring it again because it is at risk from being redeveloped. There are two structures: The 1982 main house with one bed and 1.5 baths and a 1980 studio apartment above a garage. A third structure, a guesthouse to the north was connected by walkway but burned down about 10 years ago. This could be rebuilt to increase the square footage or the main house added onto directly. It would be a great shame to lose this beautiful property so please share it widely.

Mighty Modern in Okemos, MI - 3,880 sqft. ($499,000)

Bold design is an understatement here with its dramatic entry roofline, wood privacy screens and vaulted living space. With a pool in the back yard and a huge stone fireplace, this mid-century modern house makes a statement. Not a fan of the kitchen (would prefer wood slab doors to warm things up) and interiors of the other rooms but with the living room as a guide the rest of the home could be adapted to make it more cohesive.

Richard Dorman Oasis in Indian Wells, CA - 5,500 sqft. ($2,625,000)

This enormous mid-century modern house offers a unique vaulted roof, an open plan design, and is filled with light. The lot is private and boasts a stunning setting. Sure it costs a bomb but what a dream! I can definitely picture drinks by the pool.
