When you’re a mid-century modern fanatic, it’s not unusual to spend a late night searching through vintage furniture advertisements on Newspapers.com. That's what all the cool kids do, right? Luckily, we are far from the only people out there who like to dig deeper and explore mid-century modern furniture, architecture and design.

There are a few resources that we go to time and time again. On Facebook there are wonderful groups like Mid Century Modern, Mid Century Modern Pickers & Identification and Modernism. These...

All About Architect Minoru Yamasaki

The Seattle born and educated Yamasaki moved to Detroit in 1945. By 1949, the young architect had started his own architectural practice in the city. Among other notable buildings, he designed the United States Science Pavilion at the 1962 World Fair in Seattle, WA and the Reynolds Metals Company Headquarters in Southfield, MI. Probably his most famous design, however, was for the ill-fated twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.

Origins of Galloway's Furniture

Galloway's was the eponymous brainchild of owner, designer and personality Ralph Galloway. A native of North Carolina, Galloway pursued his passion for furniture and modern design after the Second World War by moving his young family down to the Tampa Bay area on Florida's West Coast.

Danish Imports

Enthusiastic about new attitudes and ideas about design for living, he started out as a one-man upholstery business in around 1944. He soon saw opportunity knocking when knock-down (flat-p...

The chair design in question has been widely attributed online to a company called Foster McDavid. I myself have used the attribution! However, after doing some research I have found that it is actually the most successful design made by Galloway's Furniture in Florida, first appearing in print adverts in 1959:

I exchanged a series of emails with John Galloway, who offered a wealth of information surrounding Galloway's Furniture, its amazing showroom and this now-iconic ch...

We've found some truly special mid-century modern homes for you this week. Some are by renowned architects, others are in historically designated neighborhoods and there's even one by a famous prefab company.

All of the homes have many original features which we love. Sadly, many sellers often 'update' their homes before bringing them to market . In many cases (including us!) buyers much prefer to buy with original features intact and then make their own updates as they live in it. Let's hope more sellers will restrain them...

What do architects Gene Leedy, Robert T. Coles, Norman Carver and Roy Johnson have in common? Some of their designs can all be found in this week's real estate roundup! There are a few very affordable mid-century modern homes on this list, along with a lakeside cottage on a 15 acre lot that is a prime target for developers.

In 1959, a leading modern furniture store in Tampa sought out visionary Sarasota architect Victor Lundy to create a showroom that would make people stop and stare. Nicknamed the round house by many who worked there, the design for Galloway's Furniture showroom was based on Lundy's love for nature and organic forms.

The following 3 rarely seen images are from the December 1959 issue of the Architectural Forum. Thanks to George Smart and the NC Modernist library for these.

While we currently live in a Norman Carver home in Kalamazoo, Michigan, this isn't our first mid-century modern home. From 2014 to 2016, we lived in a 1958 home designed by architect J. Bruce Spencer in Lakeland, Florida. It was the architect's own home and a place that we really loved. It was even featured in Dwell Magazine's Rooms We Love Issue in May 2015. Read on for more about our restoration, vintage photos and photos after the restoration.
