Striking mid century modern designs from the 1960s in solid mahogany with intricately woven binder cane seat and back, often attributed to Paul Laszlo. This set consists of one settee, one lounge chair and one footstool all part of a line made in the 1960s. They beautifully marry Danish modern, Mexican modern and American Modern styles and stand out as iconic, in my opinion. This set has been completely restored - disassembled, reglued, refinished and rewoven -a painstakingly-long process. The chairs are not only dynamic looking but remarkably comfortable and perfect for a tropical setting where cool breezes are allowed to waft through the seat and back.

Notes on attribution to Paul Laszlo: only anecdotal evidence links the designer to it - he personally owned several examples and auction/sale listings since 2013 have followed suit. After careful examination I found each piece to be hand signed by "J.M." and dated 1967, with the sequence of dates suggesting they were made consecutively as a set. Another set online with consecutive dates also included the word 'menquiller', a colloquial French term which can mean 'to do things in a row'. The pieces are constructed with mortise and tenon joinery, in some cases the tenons are pinned with nails. Seat and back components are half lapped into notches and the front legs are secured with wedges around their perimeter. The hand weaving of the cane panels is incredibly time consuming. These construction details make me believe they were hand made by a single craftsman and not in a typical factory setting. I have spent many, many hours looking for documentation to fix an attribution to the line with no luck.

There appear to be several reproductions of this design entering the market recently- they are often made of walnut and have small departures from the original in terms of details including additional wood elements between the legs, different leg styles, different attachment of the back panel (it should slot onto the top of the legs via holes in the side of the panel).
