Rare armchair design by George Nakashima for Knoll Associates in the late 1940s. Made of solid birch featuring slayed legs, scallopoed seats and rounded backrests, these chairs were Nakashima's nod to the Shaker tradition of simple honest furniture. Authentic features include the undercut/bevelled front edge, pinned leg tenons and inclined angle of seat and arms. I believe these are Knoll production as they lack the pegged tenon arm to back connection detail of Nakashima workshop models. Both of these chairs have a time-honed patina indicative of a long history of use yet they remain very sturdy and comfortable. Sold as a pair.
