Vintage example of George Nelson's signature platform bench that was the lynchpin of his first collection for Herman Miller in the late 1940s. Originally designed in 1946, this form fulfilled a range of functions; as a bench, as a coffee table and as a platform for the Basic Cabinet Series. This example is a length variation that first launched in 1949, hence the 4992 model number. It is absent in the 1957 catalog so may only have been produced briefly. This piece is natural birch with three ebonized legs is almost 8' long and is instantly recognizable. Featuring early hallmarks of construction including dowelled joints, nailed centerjoints on the bench top and dowelled miter joints in the legs, this example also retains a great George Nelson /Herman Miller metal label.
