Very rare sideboard designed by the enigmatic Donald Deskey for Charak Modern in the late 1950s. Iconic cast aluminum legs and pulls inspired by the sculptor Brancusi stand out against a sleek modernist case with very unique 'self-retracting' doors that open concertina style then slide into the case for complete access to the interior. This case is setup as a buffet / credenza but was seen in advertisements at the time as a stereo cabinet. The line came in two main options; specially developed bright red or blue silk screen printed abstract Micarta (Formica) or Oak with walnut, of which this piece is the latter. This collection was heavily featured in advertising but appears to have been rather ephemeral with examples few and far between, perhaps due to the jarring blue and red! A very rare find indeed. Charak Modern stamp in top drawer.
