Rare highback armchair designed by Ralph Rapson for Knoll Asoociates in the mid 1940s. Debuting in Arts and Architecture magazine in 1945, this armchair is one of five designs Rapson came up with after being invited by Cranbrook classmate Florence Knoll to join the firm and work in the newly established Planning Unit. With its distinctive cantilevered armrests and Rapson side profile, this chair is classic early Knoll. Solid birch frame with signature doweled arm joints and a red leather seat with original springs.

This chair has been refinished, reglued and restored. It did have old repairs including additions to the frame to support the arms. These have been removed and the arms reglued. One side has an old repair to the arm. Old repairs have been plugged and matched so that they are less obvious. Please see the photos for a better understanding of these repairs. The chair is now very sturdy and usable.
