Mid-Century Modern Real Estate for Sale: April 20th, 2018

Some real mid-century modern stunners this week including a time capsule in Middletown, NY, two homes designed by famous architects and a couple of bargain properties thrown in for good measure. As always, we're bringing attention to architecturally interesting properties that deserve to be saved, restored and lived in for many years to come. If you know of any other properties we should feature or even your own MCM house, contact us and we'll take a look.

Time Capsule in Middletown, NY - 3,068 sqft. ($299,900)

Talk about a head-turner - this house has it all. With its perfectly accented facade and sunny palette, this house grabs your interest from the get go. The striking good looks continue inside with beautiful vaulted ceilings, sunken living area, with posts and shoji screens defining the otherwise very open floor plan. Then there's the kitchen and bathrooms which look completely unchanged. Three beds and three baths make this a very comfortable size. Add a full basement with room to spare and did we mention there's a slate patio and pool?

Alden Dow Home in Midland, MI - 4,941 sqft. ($619,500)

The hearth is truly the center of this 1951 home designed by Midland's favorite son, architect Alden B. Dow. Rooms pinwheel off a double sided fireplace. Classic Dow colors are seen in the sofa upholstery and level changes delight the eye. The spaces really flow into each other and the house is huge: Long L shaped galley kitchen, generous bedrooms and bathrooms throughout. Built on a double lot overlooking the Midland Country Club.

Post and Beam Magic in Fresno, CA - 2,378 sqft. ($350,000)

Possibly designed and built by Cliff May, this is classic California living. Post and beam structure allows true open plan living and the arrangement is perfect - large window walled living room flows in to a dining room and a large kitchen defined by beams and a pass through. Highly usable concrete patio, separate grassed yard, planter section and a huge workshop add even more to this property. Don't forget the beautiful Japanese Maples opposite the living room either!

Huge Mid Century Fixer in Columbus, GA - 7,601 sqft. ($275,000)

It's a whole lotta house but it'll take a whole lotta fixin'! At 7,601 square feet, this mansion is mega but has the architectural details to still be appreciated. Built in 1952, this house has huge floor to ceiling windows, long hallways that follow the slope of the site, 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, a triple carport and an original tiled pool. With landscaping designed by landscape architect Thomas Church, of whom Garret Eckbo said was "the last great traditional designer and the first great modern designer. " Huge potential. Works out to $36/sqft!

Redwood paneled post and beam home with an interesting roof line on over 5 acres. Recently had a 125k price cut!
