If you're looking for unique, it doesn't get more unique than this domed cave in the desert designed by Paolo Soleri with Mark Mills. Perhaps best known for his beautiful sculptural bells, Soleri was an Italian-American architect who designed modern structures and taught architecture at Arizona State University. This home was designed for Mrs. Nora Woods in 1949. Architecturally significant and visually stunning, this structure needs saving and restoration! Constructed in a similar fashion to Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West using 'Desert Concrete', the home is an organic architecture bunker of sorts, set below ground level with curved forms and built in furniture. The very first home designed by the prolific architect, this small gem is a real find. While the house needs some TLC, the home is packed with great design as McDonald skillfully lets the structural details speak for themselves. A little work to make the house feel more cohesive and a touching up the wood stain would go a long way. A great project for the architecturally-minded.
