Mid-Century Modern Real Estate For Sale: September 21st, 2018

Included in this week's mid-century modern real estate roundup are an art professor's unique self-designed home, a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian masterpiece and two modern homes in Urbana, Illinois. With listing prices ranging from $125k up to $2.49 million, we're featuring properties that are affordable and others you may have to be content with only dreaming about owning.

Art Professor's Home in East Lansing, MI - 1,248 sqft. ($125,000)

An interesting and colorful 1958 home at an affordable price in East Lansing. Probably designed by the previous (and only) owner, a Prof. William S. Gamble of Michigan State University. In need of a little TLC but by all accounts very original and full of nice MCM features. More photos to come in a week, apparently.

Thanks to Tom Brothers of P!ck for the photo of the back of the house.

Light-Filled MCM in Urbana, IL - 1,504 sqft. ($215,000)

Designed by Robert Smith, this 1958 design is a light-filled flat roof home with some very nice features including a raised portion creating the carport and walls of windows overlooking the golf course. I really like the steps up to the entry and how the house is sited. Copper fireplace adds another great focal point.

Bruce Goff's 'Garvey Roundhouse' in Urbana, IL - 2,520 sqft. ($179,900)

If you're looking for a great restoration project, this is the one for you. A Bruce Goff design that has suffered from a misguided 80s remodel (whitewashed/glass block etc), it could easily be a showpiece again. Love the huge living room  - check out the built in seating in the vintage photo from the Art Institute of Chicago below.  The oculus skylight in the center and the oversized fireplace are just two more great reasons to want this one.

Boulder Post and Beam Home in Boulder, CO -  3,096 sqft. ($2,490,000)

Superb modernist post and beam structure designed by Hobart Wagener with a complete wall of glass and a butterfly roof to boot...oh and the amazing setting with views of foothills and mountains behind it. Not much to improve about this 1956 home and the price tag reflects this!

Frank Lloyd Wright Home in Kansas City, MO - 2,965 sqft. ($1,650,000)

The 1939 Sondern residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is a fantastic example of his Usonian homes. With its imposing trellised carport, sunken living area and superb connection to the outdoors, this gem is sure to please FLW enthusiasts and non-Wrightians alike. The brick and wood home looks to be in pretty good condition with the kind of issues one might expect from a house of this age - chimney water intrusion and minor wood rot but nothing major. Better start saving!
