Mid-Century Modern Real Estate for Sale: April 6th 2018

This week we have another selection of great architecture for sale including one of architect Minoru Yamasaki's most recognizable commercial buildings, a huge mid-century home for a very reasonable price in Ohio and a very original California modern built by its owner.

Minoru Yamasaki's Reynolds Metals Building, Southfield, MI - 34,144 sqft. ($900,000)

The Detroit modernist architect's creation showcased the Reynolds Metals Company's aluminum product by dramatically cladding the entire outside in a decorative sunscreen consisting of interlocking circles. Built for $2 million in 1963, this space has enormous potential to be something of beauty once more. We hope a sensitive buyer will restore the open perimeter and the reflecting pool moat. Due to its location this building is obviously at risk from being demolished and the lot redeveloped. Images below are from the Nov 1959 issue of Architectural Forum. This 1961 Harold B. Zook house truly captures the wonderful beams, tongue and groove ceilings and indoor/outdoor feel that California modernism is known for. Look past the ill-fitting furniture and occasional poor renovation details and you'll see a fantastic home waiting to be restored to its original excellence.

Light-Filled Retreat in Cashiers, NC - 3 bed/4 bath ($895,000)

Soaring roof lines and a very open plan make this mountainside getaway a visual treat. Designed by Jim Fox in 1995, this is not mid-century - but it is modern and a wonderful house! This home benefits from southern exposure, which provides light and solar gain. Beautiful beamwork and a massive fireplace are some of our favorite features. While the interior may be slightly monochromatic, new kitchen cabinet fronts and appropriate furniture would add a much needed splash of color to this otherwise great home in a picturesque setting.
