Mid-Century Modern Real Estate For Sale, September 20th, 2019

There was a wealth of fantastic mid-century modern homes for sale over the last few days. Best of all, all of the homes we're featuring this week are reasonably priced. Sure, those million-dollar MCM homes are beautiful to look at, but these are more realistically priced for the rest of us. Look at stunning homes in Ohio, Vermont, Alabama and Kansas, each of which is priced below $346,000.

One caveat...the first house you see in Ohio is a spectacular architect designed house that embodies MCM design and just happens to be built in 1997. We think it still fits in with this real estate roundup just fine.

Carl Strauss Home in Blanchester, OH - 1,476 sqft. ($250,000)

Although this house was built in 1997, it embodies key ideas of the modern movement - simple, intuitive design built affordably with maximum livability in mind. Cincinnati-based architect Strauss is known for his modern designs and this, his last project, does not disappoint - and it comes in at a very reasonable price point on a full two acres of land.

1958 cabin in North Hero, VT - 1,188 sqft. ($346,000)

I'm pretty sure this cabin is based on plans drawn up by Raleigh, NC architect George Matsumoto for the 1958 Woman's Day Low-Cost Vacation House (also known as the Douglas Fir Plywood Association [DFPA] House). While this one differs slightly and is likely a flipped plan and possibly modified over the years, the framing system is identical right down to the extended outrigger rafters.

These black and white shots of the J. Gregory Poole Cabin come from the USModernist Website's page on Matsumoto and show the design similarities. Head to the designated Matsumoto page to learn more about the North Carolina architect.

1970s Modern in Allison, AL - 3,423 sqft. ($299,000)

Very interesting home perched on a ravine with a double height living space, cantilevered loft, beautiful natural materials and 8 acres of wooded privacy. This 1978 build has lots to like at this price.

Time Capsule Ranch House in Junction City, KS - 2,944 sqft. ($215,000)

This is a light and open 1962 post and beam home filled with original features and materials. From the tongue and groove ceilings to the brick fireplace, vintage appliance kitchen and fun colored bathrooms, this is a retro lovers dream!

Rustic Modern in Pittsfield, VT. 2332 sqft. ($233,500)

This private house has some great architectural details reminiscent of E Fay Jones designs: light filled, interesting spaces with a strong connection to the outdoors. The main living space has some great window details, deck railings and built-ins. An ample deck on the side of the house provides even more living space.
