Tips for Creating a Mid-Century Modern Nursery
One of the best things about mid-century modern style is its versatility. It works well in virtually every room: Including a nursery! If you’re gearing up to decorate a nursery, here are some mid-century ideas to tie the room together.
Any parent knows that storage is a necessity in a nursery. However, you don’t have to settle for boring, basic closets. The best way to instantly create a stylish, mid-century vibe is by finding a vintage dresser. Look for something raised off the floor with tapered legs.
Vintage Rocking Chair
Most new parents will spend plenty of time in their nursery holding a newborn. Comfort has to be a priority, but you don't need to sacrifice style. In fact, there are a wide range of vintage rockers and recliners that work beautifully in a nursery. If you want a pop of color and a retro look, then an Eames armchair with a rocker base could work. However, a reclining lounge chair, or a comfy chair with an ottoman, could be an even better option.
It's common for nurseries to have themes, and colorful walls are also frequently seen. If you want to keep the room mid-century modern, consider starting with a neutral palette instead. A blank slate of white makes the other colors in the room pop!
You could hang some bold Marimekko prints on the wall, or you could install some vintage latch-hook art. If you want to add even more color in an unexpected way, look for Rya rugs. Rya is a traditional Scandinavian rug with a long pile. Similar to shag carpeting, Rya rugs are usually found in bold colors, geometric patterns and a distinct mid-century style.
When you're sourcing furniture for your mid-century nursery, head toward natural wood whenever possible. Although you'll find plenty of newer pieces that are painted or come in bold colors, most of the collectible vintage pieces are found in natural wood. Sticking to natural wood also gives your room a timeless, classic design that can grow with your children.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make in a mid-century modern nursery is forgetting your audience. Yes, you want it to be sleek and attractive, but you also want it to appeal to young kids! Wall art is the perfect way to combine mid-century style with kid-friendly themes. Some great options to consider for your walls include:
• Colorful retro travel posters
• Framed geometric prints in bold colors
• Retro animal illustrations
• Vintage book covers
