Mid-Century Modern Real Estate For Sale: August 31st, 2018

I have to admit that we have a lot of fun finding mid-century modern homes for this post each week. Sometimes it's exciting to drool over spectacular homes in unbelievable settings (See: both New York properties this week!), but it's also great to get inspiration from smaller spaces and limited budgets. There's something at every price range this week, and we encourage anyone interested in mid-century architecture to invest in a home like the ones listed.

One of a Kind MCM in Cherry Hill, NJ - 3,795 sqft. ($425,000)

It doesn't get more unique than this home centered around a giant skylight and one of the coolest conversation pits you're likely to find. Look past the gaudy 80s furnishings and you'll appreciate the fanciful structure that brings to mind Bruce Goff's wildly creative work.

Modern in Richmond, VA - 2,340 sqft. ($349,000)

Packed with character, this 1966 home reminds me of George Matsumoto's work. Matsumoto did design two residences in Richmond, so perhaps there was some direct influence at play. With this home's exposed post and beam structure and open plan, it epitomizes the mid-century modern aesthetic. A completely private street side contrasts with a rear wall of windows that allow you to take in the wooded lot and pool area.

Starchitect Home For Sale in Larchmont, NY - 2,398 sqft. ($1,495,000)

If you want the best, you'll need to dig deep in your pockets! This house by iconic mid century Architect Edward Durell Stone was built in 1947 but looks perfectly modern. Walls of glass, level changes, stunning lot and fantastic natural stone all combine to make this a real showstopper.

Modern Cabin in Canadensis, PA - 1,350 sqft. ($167,000)

If you're looking for something a little smaller and a whole lot cheaper, check out this unique 1971 cabin in Canadensis. With it's unique angled windows and all wood interior this personifies warm and cosy. The impressive stone fireplace and plenty of windows throughout would make a harsh winter more than bearable and the 1.5 acre lot should supply all your wood burning needs.

Nautilus House on Shelter Island, NY - 1,450 sqft. ($1,475,000)

Love a spiral plan house and the concept works brilliantly here. The exposed structure of the radial joists is both pleasing and efficient. The change in floor level maintains interest and the light from both windows and skylights is beautiful. Obviously at this price point you'd expect a special setting and this one doesn't disappoint. Restored to a very high standard, this 1965 home set on 2.3 acres with a pond has so much to offer. It's been on the market for almost 6 months and has recently had a price cut of 120k.
